Rekeying keeps the lock you already have and changes the internal pins so new keys operate it. The old keys stop working. It is usually the quicker and less expensive option, and it is ideal when the lock itself is in good condition but you need to take control of who has a key — after moving in, after a tenancy change, or when a key has gone missing.
Replacing means removing the lock and fitting a new one. This is the better choice when the mechanism is worn, damaged, seizing up, or when the existing lock is not suited to the door or the level of security you want. If a lock has been forced or the door hardware has failed, replacement is often the only reliable long-term fix.
